Mae Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru (CNC) yn casglu a chynnal data ar bob cronfa ddŵr ddynodedig neu bob cronfa ddŵr sy'n gallu dal dros 10,000 metr ciwbig o ddŵr uwchben lefel naturiol unrhyw ran o'r tir sy'n ffinio arni, sy'n cael ei diffinio fel 'cronfa ddŵr uwch mawr' dan Ddeddf Cronfeydd Dŵr 1975. Mae dau fath o gronfeydd dŵr yn cael eu cynnal o fewn y gofrestr:  - Cronfa sy'n cronni (argaeedig); neu  - Cronfa nad yw'n cronni (pwmpio/dirwystr). Rhan o Gronfa Ddata Cronfeydd/Reservoir CNC yw’r set ddata hon. Mae'n cynnwys gwybodaeth am leoliad, ymgymerwyr a pheirianwyr y cronfeydd dŵr. 'Ymgymerwr' (‘Undertaker’ yn Saesneg) yw'r term cyfreithiol a ddefnyddir i nodi pwy sy'n rheoli defnydd y gronfa ddŵr ac sy'n gyfrifol am sicrhau cydymffurfiaeth â'r gyfraith. Yr ymgymerwr yw'r person, y bobl neu'r cwmni sy'n defnyddio cronfa ddŵr at ddiben benodol. Os nad oes defnydd, y perchnogion neu ddeiliaid y les yw'r ymgymerwyr. Gall yr ymgymerwr fod yn wahanol i'r perchennog. Os yw sawl person neu sefydliad yn rheoli'r gronfa ddŵr, gall fod mwy nag un ymgymerwr.
